Chapter 5 - The Deadly Secret

The wail of ambulance sirens pierced the quiet suburban night, growing louder by the second.
I stared at my father in absolute horror as the reality of his confession washed over me.
My own mother and sister were not just trying to bankrupt me out of petty jealousy.
They had orchestrated a highly calculated plot to completely ruin my life and then end it for a massive payout.
Ethan grabbed my shoulders and pulled me away from my father just as the paramedics rushed into the room.
We watched helplessly as they loaded my dad onto a stretcher and quickly carried him out to the ambulance.
I knew we only had a few precious minutes before the local police arrived to secure the scene.
I crawled under my father’s heavy mahogany desk and ripped away the corner of the Persian rug.
The small, digital floor safe was exactly where my father said it would be.
I typed in his birth year, which had been his password for everything since I was a child.
The heavy metal lid clicked open with a soft, mechanical hum.
Inside the safe was a thick, black leather folder containing dozens of heavily redacted legal documents.
I pulled the folder out and quickly flipped through the crisp, terrifying pages.
My father was absolutely right about the massive life insurance policy taken out in my name.
The beneficiary was listed solely as a private shell corporation registered directly to Lauren.
There was also a highly detailed, typed itinerary tracking Ethan’s exact work schedule and Lily’s preschool hours.
They had been actively stalking my family to find the perfect, vulnerable moment to stage a fatal accident.
Ethan looked over my shoulder at the terrifying documents, his face turning entirely pale.
He whispered that we needed to take this evidence directly to the FBI, because the local police were already manipulated.
I quickly stuffed the thick folder into my waterproof jacket and closed the empty safe.
Just as I stood up, the heavy front door of the house slammed shut with a deafening bang.
Heavy, deliberate footsteps began walking slowly down the hardwood hallway toward the office.
I instantly recognized the sharp, clicking sound of Lauren’s expensive designer heels.
Ethan shoved me completely behind the heavy wooden desk and grabbed a heavy bronze bookend for protection.

Lauren stepped into the doorway of the office, holding a sleek, black, suppressed handgun.
She smiled a wicked, empty smile and pointed the deadly weapon directly at Ethan’s chest.
