Chapter 7 - The Desperate Escape

My mother stood on the rain-soaked lawn, swinging the heavy metal tire iron with a terrifying, unhinged energy.

She screamed that I had ruined her perfect Christmas, ruined her reputation, and now I was ruining her retirement.

I backed away slowly, clutching the black folder of evidence so tightly my knuckles turned completely white.

I told her that her twisted, greedy plan was entirely over because I had the forged life insurance documents.

Diane laughed aggressively and took a menacing step forward, raising the heavy iron weapon above her head.

Before she could strike me, Ethan stumbled out of the front door, bleeding heavily from a deep scratch on his cheek.

He had managed to completely disarm Lauren, holding her suppressed handgun firmly in his right hand.

He aimed the weapon directly at the ground near my mother’s feet and fired a single, silenced warning shot.

The bullet struck the concrete walkway, sending sharp pieces of gravel flying into the dark, rainy air.

Diane shrieked in absolute panic and dropped the tire iron, scrambling backward toward the safety of her black SUV.

Ethan grabbed my arm forcefully and dragged me toward our own car parked on the street.

We jumped inside, and Ethan slammed the gas pedal directly to the floor, tearing away from the chaotic scene.

I looked back and saw Lauren stumbling out onto the porch, screaming furiously as we disappeared into the night.

I was shaking uncontrollably, entirely unable to process that my own mother and sister had just tried to murder us.

Ethan kept his eyes glued to the dark road, navigating a complex maze of backstreets to ensure we weren't followed.

He said we could not trust the local police precinct, as they had already blindly arrested me on Lauren's fake charges.

We needed to take the massive folder of corporate fraud and attempted murder directly to a federal agency.

We drove to the downtown FBI field office, arriving completely soaked in rain and shivering from the adrenaline crash.

We practically begged the night-shift receptionist to let us speak to a senior agent regarding an active assassination plot.

A tall, exhausted-looking agent wearing a wrinkled suit finally escorted us into a small, sterile interrogation room.

We dumped the entire black folder onto the metal table, frantically explaining the forged documents and the stolen trust fund.

The agent slowly reviewed the life insurance policy, his tired expression quickly shifting into one of sharp, focused shock.

He looked up at us and asked how we had managed to acquire these highly classified, restricted financial documents.

He revealed that the FBI had been secretly investigating Diane’s private shell corporation for massive tax fraud for over a year.

The agent promised that this evidence was the final missing piece they needed to completely dismantle her criminal empire.

He told us to wait in the locked room while he went to process the paperwork for massive federal arrest warrants.

He stepped out of the room, and the heavy metal door clicked shut, locking securely from the outside.

Ethan and I finally let out a massive sigh of relief, believing we were entirely safe in the hands of the FBI.

Ten minutes later, the door unlocked, but it was not the federal agent who stepped back into the room.

It was the exact same local police officer who had arrested me in my living room earlier that afternoon.
