Chapter 3 - The Empty Account

I stared at the steel handcuffs in absolute, paralyzing disbelief.
Ethan stepped between me and the police officer, angrily demanding to see the documents.
The officer sternly warned Ethan to step back or face charges for obstructing justice.
I willingly held out my trembling wrists, terrified that a physical struggle would traumatize Lily if she saw.
The cold metal clicked tightly around my skin, sealing my terrifying new reality.
Diane stood up from the floor, miraculously recovered from her fake injuries, and smiled wickedly.
Lauren whispered that I was finally getting exactly what I deserved for being a burden to the family.
The officers escorted me out to the police cruiser while our neighbors watched in shocked silence.
Ethan promised he would call his best friend, a brilliant defense attorney, and get me out immediately.
I sat in the back of the freezing police car, desperately trying to understand how this was happening.
I knew my father had secretly borrowed twenty thousand dollars from me to cover his hidden gambling debts.
I realized he must have forged those bank documents to hide his massive financial losses from my mother.
He had cowardly framed me to save his own marriage.
I spent six agonizing hours in a cold, concrete holding cell at the county precinct.
Finally, a heavy iron door opened, and a guard called my name.
Ethan was waiting for me in the lobby alongside his attorney friend, Marcus.
Marcus had managed to secure my temporary release on bail, but he looked incredibly grim.
I hugged Ethan tightly, sobbing into his chest as the sheer exhaustion finally caught up with me.
Marcus handed me a cup of hot coffee and asked me to sit down on the lobby bench.
He explained that he had just reviewed the alleged forgery documents provided by Lauren.
The signature on the fraudulent bank transfer matched my handwriting perfectly.
I swore to Marcus that I had never signed a single document regarding my parents' retirement accounts.
Marcus sighed heavily and pulled a printed bank statement from his leather portfolio.
He stated that the fake charges were actually the absolute least of our current problems.
Lauren had used the active police investigation to file an emergency freeze on all of my personal assets.
She had specifically targeted the private investment account my grandmother had left for me.

Marcus looked me dead in the eyes and delivered the most devastating news of my life.
He said the entire account containing the remaining funds for our new house had been completely drained an hour ago.
