Chapter 4 - The Stolen Future

I felt all the oxygen completely vanish from my lungs as Marcus's words echoed in my mind.
Ethan grabbed the bank statement from Marcus and stared at the terrifying zero balance.
He asked how Lauren could possibly empty an account that was registered solely in my name.
Marcus explained that Lauren had presented the bank with a fraudulent power of attorney document.
Because I was incarcerated for alleged elder abuse, the bank blindly accepted her fake emergency jurisdiction.
Our entire future, including the closing on our beautiful new home, was completely destroyed in an afternoon.
I told Ethan we needed to confront my father immediately and force him to tell the police the truth.
My dad was the only person who knew I had loaned him money instead of stealing it.
We drove furiously toward my parents' large suburban house, ignoring the pouring rain hitting our windshield.
I tried calling my father's cell phone over a dozen times, but it went straight to a generic voicemail.
We pulled into their driveway and found the house completely dark and eerily quiet.
Ethan grabbed a heavy flashlight from the glove compartment, and we marched up to the front door.
I used my old house key to unlock the door, praying my parents were actually home.
The interior of the house was entirely trashed, with drawers pulled out and papers scattered everywhere.
It looked like someone had frantically searched the house for something incredibly valuable.
I rushed toward my father's home office, hoping to find the original loan agreement he had signed for me.
The heavy oak door to the office was already wide open.
My father was lying completely motionless on the expensive Persian rug.
His face was terrifyingly pale, and his breathing was shallow and dangerously uneven.
I dropped to my knees beside him, screaming for Ethan to call an ambulance immediately.
My dad slowly opened his eyes, struggling to focus on my tear-stained face.
He weakly grabbed my hand and apologized profusely for the terrible things he had done.
He whispered that Diane and Lauren had discovered the truth about his gambling debts yesterday morning.
They had forced him to forge the documents framing me so they could legally steal my grandmother's money.
I begged him to save his strength and wait for the paramedics to arrive.
He coughed violently, his grip on my hand tightening with a sudden, desperate urgency.
He told me to look inside the hidden floor safe beneath his mahogany desk before the police arrived.
May you like
He gasped for air and revealed that stealing the house money was not their final plan.
He said my mother had taken out a massive, multi-million dollar life insurance policy on me three days ago.
