Chapter 6 - The Cornered Prey

Lauren stood in the doorway with a chillingly calm expression, keeping the suppressed handgun perfectly steady.
I peered out from behind the heavy mahogany desk, my blood running completely cold with terror.
She mocked us, claiming she knew we would inevitably come sneaking back to the house for answers.
She proudly admitted that she had intentionally given my father a lethal dose of his own heart medication.
She needed him dead before he could ruin her perfect, multi-million dollar master plan.
Ethan slowly raised his empty hands, desperately trying to de-escalate the terrifying situation.
He told Lauren that the paramedics had already taken my father to the hospital and he was still alive.
Lauren’s arrogant smile faltered for just a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine panic crossing her eyes.
She realized her flawless murder plot was rapidly unraveling and leaving massive, undeniable loose ends.
She angrily demanded that I hand over the black leather folder containing the life insurance documents.
I clutched the folder tightly against my chest, refusing to surrender the only evidence that could save my family.
I asked her how she could possibly hate her own sister enough to murder me and destroy my child’s life.
Lauren laughed a bitter, humorless laugh that echoed unnervingly through the quiet home office.
She screamed that I had always been the golden child, inheriting Grandma’s secret wealth while she got absolutely nothing.
She was drowning in massive credit card debt, and my death was the only way she could maintain her luxurious lifestyle.
She cocked the hammer of the handgun, pointing the barrel directly at the space between my eyes.
She stated that she was going to shoot us both and claim we broke in to assault her in self-defense.
Ethan did not hesitate for another second.
He hurled the heavy bronze bookend with absolute, terrifying force directly at Lauren’s head.
Lauren instinctively ducked, firing a silenced bullet that completely shattered the glass window behind me.
Ethan aggressively tackled her to the hardwood floor, wrestling furiously for control of the deadly weapon.
I sprinted past them, clutching the evidence folder, and ran blindly toward the front door of the house.
I threw the door open and screamed for help into the dark, rainy street.

Suddenly, a massive black SUV violently swerved onto the lawn and blocked my path to freedom.
My mother, Diane, stepped out of the driver's seat, holding a heavy metal tire iron and blocking my only escape.
