Chapter 1 - The Broken Lock

I dropped my phone onto the kitchen counter with a trembling hand.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

Ethan walked into the room and immediately noticed the sheer terror on my pale face.

He asked me what was wrong.

I told him my mother was on her way to our house right now.

Ethan did not hesitate for a single second.

He rushed to the front door and aggressively twisted the heavy brass deadbolt into place.

He double-checked the back patio door and pulled the curtains tightly shut.

I ran to our daughter’s bedroom and told Lily we were playing a quiet hiding game.

I tucked her into my closet with her tablet and a pair of noise-canceling headphones.

I promised her I would be right back.

When I returned to the living room, Ethan was pacing across the hardwood floor.

He asked how Diane could possibly know about our new house outside Columbus.

I explained that my sister Lauren had searched the county property transfers online.

They believed the money we used for the down payment was stolen from my father.

Ethan clenched his fists and reminded me that the money came from my grandmother’s secret inheritance.

I nodded, knowing the truth would not matter to a woman blinded by jealousy and rage.

Suddenly, the unmistakable sound of tires screeching echoed from the street outside.

A heavy car door slammed with enough force to shake our living room windows.

Heavy footsteps stomped fiercely up our wooden porch stairs.

My mother began pounding furiously against our front door.

She screamed my name, calling me a thief and a disgusting leech.

Ethan stepped in front of me, shielding my body with his own.

He shouted through the thick wood, warning her that he was calling the police.

Lauren’s voice joined the chaos, yelling that the police would only arrest me for elder financial abuse.

I pulled out my phone and dialed 911 with shaking fingers.

The dispatcher answered, and I frantically begged for immediate police assistance.

Before I could finish giving our address, the chaotic pounding on the door suddenly stopped.

An eerie and terrifying silence fell over the front porch.

Ethan and I exchanged a confused and terrified glance.

Then, we heard the distinct, metallic scrape of a key sliding smoothly into our deadbolt.

I suddenly remembered the spare key I had given my parents four years ago for emergencies.

The heavy brass lock clicked open with a terrifyingly loud snap.
