Chapter 8 - The Inside Man

The local police officer walked into the small interrogation room with a cruel, satisfied smirk on his face.

I instinctively backed away from the metal table, completely terrified by his impossible presence in a federal building.

Ethan stood up quickly, shielding me with his body, and demanded to know where the FBI agent had gone.

The officer laughed a hollow, chilling laugh and locked the heavy metal door behind him.

He proudly explained that Diane’s vast wealth had easily purchased the loyalty of several key officers in the local precinct.

He had been secretly monitoring the federal investigation for months, acting as a highly paid informant for my mother.

The officer had intercepted the exhausted FBI agent in the hallway and convinced him to hand over our specific case file.

He casually pulled his service weapon from its holster and laid it heavily onto the cold metal table.

He stated that he was going to completely destroy the black folder of evidence right in front of our eyes.

Then, he planned to arrest us both for violently assaulting Lauren and Diane at their suburban home.

I felt a massive wave of pure, suffocating despair wash over me as I realized we were completely trapped again.

My own mother had built an impenetrable wall of corruption to guarantee that her twisted plans would never fail.

Ethan desperately tried to reason with the corrupt officer, offering him double whatever Diane was paying him.

The officer merely shook his head, stating that Diane had already promised him a massive cut of my life insurance payout.

He reached across the table to grab the black leather folder, his eyes completely focused on the damning documents.

Suddenly, a loud, piercing alarm began echoing frantically throughout the entire federal building.

The heavy metal door of the interrogation room was violently kicked open with absolutely devastating force.

The exhausted FBI agent from earlier stormed into the room, flanked by four heavily armed federal tactical officers.

The corrupt local cop panicked, desperately reaching for the service weapon he had foolishly left on the table.

Two federal agents tackled him brutally to the ground, securing his wrists with heavy steel zip ties.

The FBI agent apologized for the delay, explaining he had known the local cop was a mole for several weeks.

He had intentionally left us in the room to catch the corrupt officer attempting to destroy the crucial federal evidence.

The agent assured us that Diane’s entire corrupted network was completely collapsing as we spoke.

However, his radio suddenly crackled to life with an urgent, terrifying transmission from the local hospital.

The agent listened intently, his face draining of all color as he processed the chaotic information.

He looked directly at me and delivered a piece of news that made my heart completely stop beating.
