Chapter 2 - The Ambush

The heavy front door swung violently open and crashed against the interior wall.

My mother stormed into our living room with a face twisted into pure, unadulterated rage.

Lauren followed closely behind her, clutching a thick leather designer briefcase.

Ethan instantly stepped forward and raised his hands to physically block them from coming any further.

He firmly ordered them to get out of our house immediately.

Diane ignored him entirely and pointed a sharp, accusatory finger directly at my face.

She screamed that I had secretly drained my father’s retirement accounts to buy a luxury mansion.

I desperately tried to explain that the money came strictly from the trust fund Grandma left solely to me.

Lauren laughed a cold, wicked laugh that made my stomach completely drop.

She claimed Grandma died completely penniless and that my lies were pathetic.

Diane stepped around Ethan and raised her hand as if she was going to strike me across the face again.

Ethan caught her wrist firmly in mid-air and pushed her gently but firmly backward.

Diane dramatically threw herself onto the floor, screaming that my husband was physically assaulting an elderly woman.

I yelled at her to stop playing these twisted, manipulative games.

Red and blue lights suddenly began flashing brightly through our living room windows.

Two local police officers rushed through the open front door with their hands resting on their weapons.

Diane immediately began sobbing fake, hysterical tears on the floor.

She pointed at Ethan and cried that he had brutally attacked her to cover up our massive theft.

I frantically told the officers that she was lying and had broken into our home.

The older officer asked everyone to calm down and step apart.

Lauren calmly opened her designer briefcase and pulled out a stack of official-looking bank documents.

She handed the papers directly to the older police officer with a smug, victorious smile.

She claimed these documents proved I had forged my father’s signature to steal one hundred thousand dollars.

The officer reviewed the papers carefully, his expression growing darker by the second.

He looked up from the documents and stared directly at me with a cold, hardened gaze.

He reached to his heavy utility belt and pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs.

He told me I was under arrest for severe elder financial exploitation and grand larceny.
