Chapter 5 - The ICU Glass

Mark and Sarah wasted no time driving to the remote private clinic hidden in the hills.

They parked their car a mile down the road and hiked through the muddy woods to avoid security cameras.

They managed to slip through a side delivery door that an orderly had carelessly left propped open.

They crept through the silent, dimly lit corridors until they found the secure intensive care wing.

Mark peered through the heavy glass window of room 402.

Emily was still in a deep coma, her chest rising and falling to the rhythm of a ventilator.

Julian was nowhere to be seen, but a single armed guard stood at the end of the hallway.

Sarah distracted the guard by throwing a metal tray down the opposite stairwell.

As the guard ran to investigate, Mark slipped silently into Emily's room.

He rushed to the two transparent bassinets, tears welling in his eyes as he looked at Grace and Lily.

They were tiny and fragile, but they were breathing steadily.

He gently touched Emily's cold forehead, whispering a desperate apology for his horrible betrayal.

He promised her he would fix everything and bring their missing baby home.

Suddenly, a hidden door in the back of the room clicked open.

Dr. Patel stepped out of the shadows, holding a syringe filled with a cloudy blue liquid.

She looked entirely unsurprised to see Mark standing by the bed.

She casually locked the door behind her and raised the deadly needle.

She whispered that it was a shame Mark had survived the drive up the mountain, because his brakes were supposed to have failed.
