Chapter 11 - The Impossible Truth

Mark stared at the single sheet of medical paper until the black letters began to blur together in front of his eyes.

His hands shook violently, causing the crisp edges of the document to cut deep into his sweaty palms.

He read the laboratory results again and again, desperately hoping it was a clerical error or a cruel, senseless joke.

Emily's blood type was O-negative, a biological fact he had known since the first day they met.

His own blood type was also O-negative, matching his wife's profile perfectly.

It was a basic, irrefutable biological law that two parents with O-negative blood could only ever produce an O-negative child.

But the official laboratory results for the baby they had brought home from the airstrip clearly stated she was AB-positive.

A cold, suffocating dread settled heavily in his chest, making it nearly impossible for him to draw a full breath.

He stumbled out of his home office, leaning his entire weight against the hallway wall to keep his knees from buckling.

His racing mind violently flashed back to that terrifying night on the rain-soaked private airstrip six months ago.

He vividly remembered Dr. Patel holding a baby over the concrete stairs, mocking him and threatening to drop the fragile infant.

He had completely assumed the baby in her arms was his stolen daughter, and the police had made the exact same assumption.

But Dr. Patel was a ruthless monster who ran a highly illegal, multimillion-dollar black market baby trafficking ring.

Why would a mastermind like her try to personally smuggle a child out of the country when she had already secured a massive payout?

The horrifying realization hit Mark like a freight train, completely knocking the wind out of his lungs.

Dr. Patel had not been trying to kidnap Baby C on that dark runway.

She had already sold Baby C to her wealthy client hours before Mark even found the hidden clinic.

The crying infant she was holding that night on the metal stairs was nothing more than a decoy.

It was a stolen child meant to distract them, designed to close the police investigation and make Mark believe his family was finally whole.

Their real biological daughter was still out there somewhere, missing and living under a false name with strangers who had bought her like a piece of property.

Mark slowly walked into the dimly lit nursery, his heart breaking into a million jagged pieces.

Emily was sitting peacefully in the wooden rocking chair, softly humming a beautiful lullaby as she fed the baby they named Hope.

The tiny infant looked up at her mother with wide, innocent brown eyes, completely unaware of the dark tragedy surrounding her existence.

Grace and Lily, who both had Mark's bright blue eyes, were sleeping soundly in their matching twin bassinets across the room.

Mark felt a massive, painful lump form in his throat as he looked at the precious baby in his wife's arms.

Over the last six months, he had rocked Hope to sleep every night, kissed her warm forehead, and fiercely protected her with everything he had.

She was a completely innocent victim in this twisted game, and he loved her with every fiber of his being.

But she was not his biological child, and the woman currently holding her had absolutely no idea.

He knew he could not keep this horrific secret, because Emily deserved the absolute truth, no matter how much it was going to destroy their fragile peace.

Mark fell to his knees beside the rocking chair, silent tears streaming down his face as he gently placed the medical file into Emily's lap.

He choked on his own words as he painstakingly explained the impossible blood types printed on the laboratory report.

Emily stopped humming instantly, staring blankly at the paper before looking down at the beautiful baby in her trembling arms.

A heartbreaking, guttural sob ripped through the quiet nursery as the mother realized her worst nightmare was far from over.
