Chapter 1 - The Empty Room

Mark stared at the nurse, his heart pounding heavily against his ribs.
She looked at him with a mixture of deep pity and absolute disgust.
The nurse slowly closed the medical chart she was holding.
She informed him that Emily had survived the emergency surgery, but barely.
All three babies were delivered, though their conditions were extremely fragile.
Mark let out a breath he did not realize he was holding, feeling a sudden wave of relief.
He immediately demanded to know what room his family had been moved to.
The nurse shook her head firmly and took a step back.
She explained that Emily had been transferred to a highly secure private wing of another hospital.
Mark felt a surge of anger and asked who had authorized such a reckless transfer without his consent.
The nurse looked him dead in the eye and delivered the crushing blow.
She told him that Emily had officially revoked his medical proxy during the final seconds before her anesthesia took over.
Mark pulled out his phone, threatening to call his lawyers and have the hospital sued for kidnapping.
He yelled that no one else had the legal right to move his wife.
The nurse calmly pulled a signed document from her cart and held it up for him to read.
It was an emergency medical power of attorney form, stamped and legally binding.

The emergency contact listed was not Mark.
It was a man named Julian Vance, and he had claimed to be the real father of the babies.
