Chapter 8 - The Ransom

Madeline screamed Liam's name, her voice echoing violently through the empty warehouse.
Vance rushed to the car and found a small piece of paper resting on the driver's seat.
He handed the note to Madeline with a grim expression on his face.
The note was written in elegant, cursive handwriting that Madeline recognized instantly.
"If you ever want to see your little animal again, bring the documents to the old textile mill."
It was signed by Noelle.
Madeline realized her mother-in-law had followed them from the mansion and kidnapped Liam.
Victor looked at the note and let out a frustrated sigh.
"Your family drama is interfering with my money," the cartel boss complained.
Madeline turned to Victor with a fierce, burning anger in her eyes.
"If you want your money, you are going to help me get my son back."
Victor admired the sheer audacity of this desperate mother.
He signaled his heavily armed guards to load back into the luxury vehicles.
The convoy sped aggressively toward the abandoned textile mill on the riverfront.
They arrived at the massive, decaying brick building as a heavy thunderstorm began to break.
Madeline kicked the rotting front doors open and marched inside.
The interior of the mill was dark, smelling of rust and old machinery.
"Noelle, I am here!" Madeline shouted into the darkness.
A bright spotlight suddenly flicked on, blinding Madeline and the cartel soldiers.
When her eyes adjusted, she saw an absolute nightmare suspended in the center of the room.

Liam was locked inside a rusted iron cage hanging directly over a deep vat of churning industrial acid.
Noelle stood safely on a metal catwalk above, holding a remote control with a red button.
