Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

Jeffrey screamed in agony and collapsed onto the metal grating of the catwalk.
Noelle dropped the remote control in absolute shock as Cynthia aimed the weapon at her.
"FBI, drop your weapons and get on the ground!" Cynthia shouted with commanding authority.
Madeline stared in pure bewilderment as Cynthia flashed a federal badge hidden inside her coat.
The supposed mistress had been a deep-cover federal agent investigating the cartel the entire time.
Before Victor could react to the sudden betrayal, the windows of the mill shattered simultaneously.
Dozens of heavily armed FBI SWAT agents rappelled into the building from the roof.
Victor and his men were instantly surrounded, disarmed, and forced to the concrete floor.
Vance rushed forward and caught the remote control before it could slip through the metal grating.
He pressed the green override button, safely lowering Liam's cage to the solid ground.
Madeline sprinted down the stairs and tore the cage door open.
She pulled Liam into a crushing embrace, sobbing uncontrollably into his dirty hair.
The little boy wrapped his thin arms around her neck and buried his face in her shoulder.
The nightmare was finally over.
Jeffrey, Noelle, and Victor were dragged out of the building in heavy steel handcuffs.
Six months later, Madeline sat in the bright, sunny kitchen of her brand new home.
She had fully reclaimed her company and officially legally changed Liam's last name.
Liam was laughing brightly, running across the hardwood floor with a healthy flush in his cheeks.
He was finally safe, loved, and healing from the horrors he had endured.
Madeline smiled peacefully as she walked toward the front door to collect the morning mail.
She sorted through the letters and noticed a heavy black envelope with no return address.

She tore it open and found a photograph of Liam sleeping in his new bed from the night before.
A handwritten note on the back simply read, "Your husband was only the middleman."
