Chapter 2 - The Ghost

Madeline stared at the glaring red zero on her phone screen.

Two years of her executive salary had completely vanished into thin air.

She quickly searched the glove compartment and found a fifty dollar bill.

She used the cash to buy a warm blanket, a sandwich, and some milk for Liam.

She drove to the cheapest motel she could find on the outskirts of the city.

Once they were safely inside the dingy room, Liam devoured the sandwich like a starving animal.

Madeline watched him eat, tears of absolute fury streaming down her face.

She picked up her phone and dialed the private number of her corporate attorney, David.

David answered on the second ring with a tone of sheer panic.

"Madeline, where are you right now?" he asked frantically.

She explained what she had discovered at the house and the frozen bank accounts.

David let out a heavy, terrified sigh.

"Jeffrey did not just freeze your accounts, Madeline."

"He filed a legal death certificate in a foreign jurisdiction six months ago."

"On paper, you do not exist, and he inherited all of your corporate shares."

Madeline felt the room spin wildly around her.

Her own husband had legally murdered her while she was working overseas.

"How is that even possible?" she demanded.

David explained that Jeffrey had bribed a corrupt judge in a small island nation.

Before David could explain how to reverse it, a loud crash echoed outside the motel.

Madeline peeked through the dirty curtains.
