Chapter 8 - The Hidden Wire

"I am so sorry, Claire, but Evelyn simply offered me too much money to refuse," Marcus said with a cold, dead stare.

He demanded that I hand over the certified forensic audit from my purse immediately.

I slowly reached into my bag, my mind racing through every possible scenario to save my child.

Daniel tried to lunge at Marcus, but the private investigator viciously struck him across the face with the pistol.

"Hand over the documents right now, or the little girl dies," Marcus threatened impatiently.

I pulled the thick folder from my purse and handed it to the treacherous investigator.

Marcus smiled triumphantly and lowered his weapon just a fraction of an inch.

I looked at him and let out a soft, mocking laugh.

"What is so funny about your impending death?" Marcus asked with deep confusion.

"I knew you were lying the moment you mentioned your father," I replied confidently.

I unbuttoned my wet coat and revealed a small black microphone taped securely to my chest.

"I have been wearing a federal wire transmitting directly to the FBI since yesterday morning," I announced.

Marcus turned entirely pale and frantically reached for the door handle.

It was far too late for him to escape.
