Chapter 1 - The Grocery Store Confrontation

I stared directly into Evelyn Whitaker's cold and calculating eyes.
She expected me to shrink back and apologize for my mere existence.
Instead, I stood perfectly tall and pulled my daughter closer to my chest.
Daniel shifted uncomfortably on his feet while his pregnant companion looked between us in sheer confusion.
"You really should not be causing a scene in public, Claire," Evelyn said with a wicked smirk.
I felt the heavy leather of my purse resting against my side.
Inside that bag was a certified document that proved the entire Whitaker family fortune was built on a massive lie.
"I am not the one who causes scenes, Evelyn," I replied evenly.
I turned around and began walking away from the people who had shattered my heart eighteen months ago.
I pushed my shopping cart toward the exit without looking back.
As I reached the automatic sliding doors, I felt a gentle tug on the sleeve of my coat.
I spun around to see Victoria, the pregnant woman who was standing with Daniel just moments ago.
She looked terrified and completely out of breath.

Victoria quickly slipped a crumpled piece of paper into my hand and glanced nervously over her shoulder.
"They are going to take your daughter tonight," Victoria whispered before disappearing into the crowd.
