Chapter 5 - The Unlikely Ally

I stared at the mysterious text message with deep suspicion.
I had no choice but to trust the stranger, because I had absolutely nothing left to lose.
I replied to the number and agreed to meet at an abandoned warehouse by the shipping docks.
Victoria stayed in my parked car with Lily while I cautiously walked into the dark building.
The warehouse smelled like rusted metal and rotting wood.
A tall man stepped out from the shadows wearing a faded leather jacket.
I instantly recognized him as Marcus, a private investigator Daniel used to hire for corporate espionage.
"Evelyn crossed a line when she involved an innocent child," Marcus said with a gruff voice.
He explained that he had access to the original hard drives proving Evelyn's massive financial crimes.
"Why are you helping me instead of taking her dirty money?" I asked him directly.
Marcus sighed and looked down at his scuffed boots.
"Because the man she framed for embezzlement ten years ago was my father," Marcus revealed.
He handed me a loaded silver pistol and told me I would definitely need it for protection.
"Evelyn has placed a massive bounty on your head, Claire," Marcus warned.
Before he could elaborate, the heavy metal doors of the warehouse violently burst open.

A bruised and bloody figure stumbled into the room and collapsed onto the concrete floor.
It was Daniel.
