Chapter 10 - The Price Of Freedom

Absolute panic and chaos instantly erupted inside the grand ballroom.

Wealthy guests screamed and trampled over each other trying to reach the locked exit doors.

Evelyn laughed hysterically as she held her thumb dangerously close to the red button on the remote.

Daniel suddenly burst through the side stage door, his face covered in fresh bandages.

He sprinted across the platform and violently tackled his own mother to the hardwood floor.

The black remote slipped from Evelyn's grasp and shattered into pieces against the edge of the stage.

Federal agents swarmed the platform, aggressively pinning Evelyn down and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.

The bomb squad quickly inspected the shattered remote and announced that the building was completely safe.

The device was nothing more than a simple garage door opener Evelyn had used to bluff her way out of an arrest.

I held Lily tightly against my chest, crying tears of profound joy and absolute relief.

The long, terrifying nightmare was finally over.

Six months later, Lily and I were living peacefully in a beautiful little house right by the ocean.

Daniel visited occasionally, fully respecting the strict boundaries I had legally established.

The fraudulent trust fund had been completely dissolved, and the legitimate inheritance was rightfully transferred to Lily's name.

I finally felt safe, secure, and truly happy with the quiet life I had fought so hard to build.

I walked down the driveway to check the mail while enjoying the warm morning sunshine.

I reached into the metal box and pulled out a plain, unmarked brown envelope.

Inside was a faded photograph of my supposedly deceased parents holding a newborn baby boy who looked exactly like Daniel.

Written on the back of the picture in fresh red ink was a message that made my blood run entirely ice cold.

"Evelyn was only holding him hostage to control me, and now it is your turn to pay the family debt."
