Chapter 4 - The Frozen Assets

I grabbed Lily and rushed out the back door of the diner.

Victoria followed closely behind me as we sprinted through the muddy alleyway.

We managed to lose the black SUV in the maze of narrow downtown streets.

I needed to secure my life savings to hire the most ruthless defense attorney in the state.

We arrived at my local bank branch just as the doors were opening for the morning.

I placed my debit card on the counter and requested a full withdrawal of my accounts in cashier's checks.

The bank teller typed furiously on her computer, but her friendly smile quickly faded.

"I am so sorry, ma'am, but I cannot process this request," the teller said nervously.

I asked her why my own money was suddenly unavailable.

"Your accounts have been completely frozen by a federal court order," she explained.

Child Protective Services had placed a financial hold on me pending a criminal investigation for child endangerment.

Evelyn had successfully cut off my only means of survival in a matter of hours.

I was completely destitute and running for my life with a toddler.

I walked out of the bank feeling a crushing weight of absolute despair.

My phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket with a text message from an unknown number.

"I know what Evelyn did to you, and I can help you destroy her," the message read.
