Chapter 6 - The Shattered Illusion

I aimed the silver pistol directly at my ex-husband's chest.

Daniel groaned in agonizing pain and weakly raised his trembling hands.

"Please do not shoot me, Claire," Daniel begged through a mouth full of blood.

I demanded to know why he was following me and how he had found the warehouse.

Daniel explained that he had finally confronted his mother about the fake pregnancy and the corrupt judge.

"She told her private guards to beat me to death when I threatened to go to the police," Daniel sobbed.

He realized too late that Evelyn only cared about money and absolute power.

"I am so sorry I abandoned you and Lily," he cried pathetically on the cold floor.

I felt absolutely no pity for the man who had let his mother ruin my life.

"Your apologies mean absolutely nothing to me now," I stated coldly.

Marcus quickly checked Daniel for weapons and patted down his expensive, torn coat.

Marcus suddenly froze and pulled a tiny, blinking electronic device from Daniel's collar.

"This is a military-grade GPS tracking beacon," Marcus yelled in absolute panic.

The sound of screeching tires echoed loudly from the parking lot outside.

"They are already here," Marcus whispered, drawing his own weapon.
