Chapter 4 - The Escape
"Get down!" Victoria screamed.
Gunfire shattered the windshield of the town car.
Daniel grabbed Victoria and pulled her to the floorboards.
The driver threw the car into reverse and slammed the gas pedal.
They crashed into a parked van, spinning wildly out of control.
"We have to run!" Daniel yelled over the deafening noise.
He kicked his shattered door open and dragged Victoria out onto the pavement.
They sprinted down a narrow alleyway while bullets chipped the brick walls around them.
Daniel’s lungs burned, but his adrenaline kept him moving.
He had spent years carrying heavy medical equipment, and his stamina saved them.
They ducked into an abandoned subway station and hid in the darkness.
Victoria leaned against the damp concrete wall, gasping for air.
"Richard wants me dead," she whispered in disbelief.
"He is selling our classified defense contracts to a foreign cartel."
Daniel realized the magnitude of the danger they were in.
This was no longer just about a job interview.
"Where is the physical server holding the stolen data?" Daniel asked.
"It is in a secure bunker beneath the headquarters," Victoria answered.
"We have to break in and download the proof to clear our names."
Daniel nodded, formulating a desperate plan.
His background in repairing complex electronics made him uniquely qualified for this.
They waited for nightfall and sneaked back to the towering glass skyscraper.
Using Victoria’s emergency master key, they slipped through the underground parking garage.
They bypassed three security patrols and reached the heavy steel door of the server room.
Daniel quickly hotwired the electronic keypad, granting them access.
They rushed inside, and Victoria began downloading the encrypted files onto a drive.
"Hurry," Daniel urged, watching the download bar crawl to ninety-nine percent.

Suddenly, the heavy steel door slammed shut and locked from the outside.
A thick, green, toxic gas began pouring through the overhead ventilation ducts.
