Chapter 12 - The Inside Asset

The next morning, Daniel walked into the Bennett Technologies headquarters exactly as he always did.
He wore a tailored navy suit, carried a fresh cup of artisan coffee, and offered polite smiles to the receptionists in the grand lobby.
He projected absolute confidence, an impenetrable wall of corporate success.
No one could see the adrenaline coursing through his veins, nor the concealed tactical blade strapped to his left ankle.
He rode the glass elevator to the executive floor and stepped into his spacious office.
Sitting perfectly centered on his desk, right where he had left his legal pad the day before, was a cheap, disposable prepaid cell phone.
Daniel took a deep breath, walked over to his desk, and sat down.
He didn't have to wait long. At exactly 9:00 AM, the plastic phone vibrated violently against the glass desk.
Daniel picked it up and pressed the green button.
"Mr. Carter," a digitally altered, metallic voice rasped through the speaker. "I hope you appreciated our welcome gift."
"I prefer wine to ammunition," Daniel replied coldly. "Who am I speaking to?"
"You may call me El Espectro," the voice said. "The Ghost. I am the shadow that Richard Vance was too weak to cast. He failed us, but you are going to succeed."
"I am not handing over this company to a drug cartel," Daniel stated.
A dark, mechanical chuckle echoed from the phone.
"We are much more than a cartel now, Mr. Carter. We are an empire. And an empire requires secure borders. We require the source code for Project Aegis."
"That code is heavily encrypted on a standalone server," Daniel lied smoothly. "I cannot just walk out of the building with it on a flash drive. It requires two-factor biometric authentication from both myself and Victoria Bennett."
"Then you will acquire her authentication," El Espectro demanded. "You have forty-eight hours. If you fail, or if you contact the authorities, the next bullet will not be left in a box. It will be delivered from a sniper rifle to your daughter's elementary school."
The line went dead.
Daniel’s grip on the phone tightened until the cheap plastic cracked.
He threw the phone into his Faraday bag to block any GPS tracking and walked straight to Victoria’s office.
He bypassed her assistant and locked the heavy mahogany door behind him.
"Forty-eight hours," Daniel said, pacing across the room. "They want the Aegis source code, and they threatened Emma's school."
Victoria slammed her pen down on her desk. "They are getting desperate. The FBI freezes on their accounts are hurting them."
"I need to give them something," Daniel said, his mind racing through operational strategies. "If I go silent, they will strike. We need a decoy."
"A honeypot," Victoria realized, standing up. "We create a shadow server. We fill it with a corrupted, traceable version of the Aegis code."
"Exactly," Daniel nodded. "When they download it, the file will execute a silent beacon. It will bypass their VPNs and ping their exact physical location back to us."
"It is highly dangerous, Daniel," Victoria warned. "If their hackers realize the code is a Trojan horse before they execute it, they will know you betrayed them."
"I have spent my whole life being pushed around by people with more power than me," Daniel said, his eyes hardening with resolve. "I am done playing defense. We build the honeypot today."
Victoria pulled her keyboard toward her and began typing furiously. "I will isolate a server on sublevel four. We will need to write the corrupted code from scratch so it looks authentic."
"Get started," Daniel said, checking his watch. "I have to make a phone call to an old friend. If the cartel is watching Emma, I need someone watching the cartel."
Daniel stepped into the soundproof privacy booth in the corner of the office and dialed a number he hadn't used in years.

The phone rang twice before a gruff voice answered.
"Jax," Daniel said. "It's Carter. I need a favor, and I need a lot of guns."
