Chapter 13 - The Sandbox Trap

Jackson "Jax" Miller did not look like a man who ran a highly elite, private mercenary firm.
He was sitting in the back of a dimly lit diner, wearing a faded flannel shirt and eating a plate of greasy fries. But the way his eyes constantly scanned the exits and the faint outline of a holster beneath his jacket told a different story.
Jax and Captain Reynolds had served together in the Air Force, and Reynolds had introduced Daniel to Jax years ago during a corporate security audit.
Daniel slid into the booth across from him and slid a thick manila envelope across the sticky table.
"Fifty thousand in cash," Daniel said quietly. "Retainer. There is another hundred thousand when the job is done."
Jax stopped chewing and looked at the envelope, then up at Daniel.
"You wear expensive suits now, Carter, but you still look like a man who hasn't slept in a week. Who is hunting you?"
"Los Sombras," Daniel replied. "The cartel."
Jax let out a low whistle. "You don't play in the shallow end, do you? What is the objective?"
"My daughter and my sister are in the penthouse of the Bennett Grand Hotel," Daniel explained. "I need a full tactical perimeter. I want eyes on the elevators, the stairs, and the roof. Nobody gets on that floor without my explicit permission. If someone tries, you handle it quietly."
"Consider them ghosts," Jax said, pocketing the envelope. "Nobody touches your family. What about you?"
"I am the bait," Daniel said coldly. "I am walking into a trap tomorrow afternoon."
Daniel left the diner and returned to the Bennett skyscraper.
Down in the frigid, humming depths of Sublevel Four, Victoria was typing furiously on a standalone terminal.
"How is the honeypot looking?" Daniel asked, bringing her a fresh coffee.
"Almost perfect," Victoria said, rubbing her tired eyes. "I took the framework of the Aegis program and hollowed it out. It looks like a complex defense matrix, but it is actually a homing beacon. The second they open the file on their local network, it will latch onto their IP address and broadcast their physical coordinates directly to this terminal."
"When is the drop?" Victoria asked.
"El Espectro instructed me to upload the files to an encrypted cloud server at exactly 3:00 PM tomorrow," Daniel said.
"Daniel, you need to understand the risk," Victoria said softly, turning away from the glowing screen. "The cartel employs world-class cyber-criminals. If they run this file in a sandboxed environment first, they will see the beacon. They will know it's a trap."
"They are arrogant," Daniel countered. "They think I am just a terrified father. They won't expect a counterattack from a corporate executive."
The next day dragged on with agonizing slowness. Every minute felt like an hour.
At 2:55 PM, Daniel sat alone in his office. He had the fake Aegis file loaded onto his secure desktop.
His burner phone vibrated.
"It is time, Mr. Carter," El Espectro's metallic voice commanded. "Upload the package."
Daniel hit the enter key. The progress bar flashed across the screen.
Ten percent. Fifty percent. One hundred percent.
"It is done," Daniel said into the phone. "Now stay away from my family."
"We will verify the code," El Espectro replied. "If it is genuine, you will never hear from us again."
The line disconnected.
Daniel immediately patched into Victoria’s terminal on Sublevel Four through a secure internal line.
"They have the file," Daniel said, his heart pounding. "Are you seeing anything?"
"They are downloading it now," Victoria’s voice crackled over the intercom. "Wait... they are opening the file."
A tense silence stretched between them.
"Come on," Daniel muttered under his breath. "Take the bait."
"I have a ping!" Victoria shouted excitedly. "The beacon activated! I am tracing the IP... routing through a proxy in Zurich... bouncing to Mexico... I have it!"
"Where are they?" Daniel demanded.
"The signal is coming from a warehouse in the industrial district," Victoria said, confusion creeping into her voice. "Daniel... the warehouse is only three blocks away from our building."
Suddenly, the fire alarms in the Bennett skyscraper began to blare.
Red emergency lights flashed in Daniel’s office.
"Victoria!" Daniel shouted into the intercom. "Get out of there!"
"Daniel, the network is being overridden!" Victoria panicked. "Someone inside the building just manually locked the elevators! They knew about the trap! They have an inside man!"
The intercom went dead in a burst of static.

The heavy oak door to Daniel’s office was violently kicked open.
Three men in tactical gear, armed with suppressed submachine guns, stepped into the room.
