Chapter 3 - The Broken Trust

Daniel was thrown out onto the cold concrete sidewalk.

He stared at the threatening text message over and over again.

His heart pounded wildly against his ribs.

He wanted to call the police immediately.

But if the people who stole his bag knew about Emma, they might already be watching her.

He could not risk his little girl’s life.

He sat on a public bench, feeling completely defeated and broken.

He had failed Emma, and now he was caught in a dangerous corporate conspiracy.

Suddenly, a sleek black town car pulled up directly in front of him.

The tinted back window rolled down smoothly.

Victoria was sitting in the backseat.

"Get in," she ordered, her voice completely devoid of its former warmth.

Daniel hesitated, not knowing who to trust.

"I said get in, Daniel," she repeated urgently.

He climbed into the luxurious vehicle.

As soon as the door closed, the car sped away into traffic.

Victoria reached into her purse and pulled out a loaded handgun.

She placed it on the leather seat between them.

Daniel recoiled, pressing his back against the door.

"Richard just locked me out of my own company's mainframe," Victoria explained.

"He is orchestrating a hostile takeover, and he is using you as the distraction."

Daniel shook his head in confusion.

"Why me?" he asked.

"Because you were an easy target with no powerful connections," she replied.

"He planted a virus in the system using your forged credentials."

Victoria leaned closer, her eyes blazing with desperation.

"If we don't wipe that server tonight, I lose my company, and you go to federal prison."

The driver abruptly slammed on the brakes.

A massive armored truck had just blocked the road ahead of them.

Armed men began pouring out of the back of the truck, raising assault rifles.
