Chapter 15 - The Mole

Arthur Sterling was a man who commanded every room he entered.

He had silver hair, bespoke Italian suits, and a reputation as a ruthless but brilliant corporate strategist. He was the man who had originally hired Victoria Bennett’s father to build the company.

To the public, he was a philanthropist and a titan of industry.

To Daniel and Victoria, standing amidst the smoke and ruin of Sublevel Four, he was the traitor who had sold them to the cartel.

"It makes terrible sense," Victoria said, pacing the server room while Daniel tied the unconscious mercenaries with heavy zip-ties. "Arthur has been aggressively pushing the board to approve the military defense contracts for Project Aegis. I thought it was just greed. I didn't realize he was building a product specifically to hand it over to El Espectro."

"Why would a billionaire work for a cartel?" Daniel asked, checking the mercenaries for any identification.

"Arthur’s wealth is heavily tied up in international real estate," Victoria explained. "Two years ago, his massive developments in South America collapsed overnight. The board thought he secured a private bailout. It seems the bailout came from Los Sombras."

"He owes them his life," Daniel realized. "And he is using your company to pay off his debt."

Daniel found a sleek, encrypted smartphone in the pocket of the cartel squad leader. He held it up.

"Let's see just how deep Arthur is," Daniel said.

He plugged the phone into Victoria’s server terminal. Using the company’s massive computing power, he launched a brute-force decryption algorithm.

Numbers and codes cascaded down the monitors in a blur of green light.

"I am bypassing the biometric lock," Daniel muttered, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "I am in their recent call logs. The last call this phone received was an hour ago."

He pulled up the audio file. The room filled with the smooth, unmistakable voice of Arthur Sterling.

"The honeypot is on Sublevel Four," Arthur's recorded voice said. "Kill Carter, kill Bennett, and secure the drive. Do not make a mess."

Victoria let out a shaky breath. "He signed our death warrants."

"We need to take this recording to the FBI immediately," Daniel said, unplugging the phone.

"No," a cold voice echoed from the doorway.

Daniel and Victoria spun around.

Arthur Sterling stood in the shattered doorway of the server room. He was not alone.

Behind him stood El Espectro himself, a tall, terrifyingly calm man with a scarred face, wearing a sharp black suit. He was flanked by six heavily armed cartel enforcers, all aiming assault rifles directly at Daniel and Victoria.

"I am afraid you won't be going to the authorities, Mr. Carter," Arthur said smoothly, stepping into the room. "You have caused me an immense amount of trouble today."

"You sold out your own country, Arthur," Victoria spat. "You are handing a defense grid to terrorists to cover your bad gambling debts."

Arthur chuckled, adjusting his expensive cuffs. "Patriotism is a concept for the poor, Victoria. The world is run by capital. El Espectro offered me capital. I offered him a door into the Pentagon."

El Espectro stepped forward, his cold, dead eyes fixing on Daniel.

"You are very resourceful, Daniel," El Espectro said, his voice the exact metallic rasp Daniel had heard on the phone. "You survived my men. You built a clever trap. But the game ends here. Give me the real Aegis drive."

"It's not here," Daniel lied, holding his ground. "The real code is on a secure server off-site."

Arthur smiled a wicked, knowing smile.

"Oh, Daniel, you are a terrible liar," Arthur said. "I am the Chairman of the Board. I already bypassed Victoria’s lockouts. My technicians are downloading the real Aegis code from the mainframe right now. We don't need you for the tech anymore."

Arthur turned to El Espectro. "Kill them both. Leave the bodies in the server room and burn the building down. We will frame Carter for the corporate terrorism."

El Espectro nodded slowly and raised a heavy, silver plated pistol, aiming it right at Daniel’s chest.

"Goodbye, Mr. Carter," El Espectro said.

Before El Espectro could pull the trigger, the entire building violently shuddered.

The lights instantly died, plunging the sublevel into absolute pitch darkness.

The emergency backup generators did not kick on.

Daniel had anticipated this. Before Arthur had arrived, Daniel had secretly programmed a complete, irreversible overload of the building’s main power grid, timed perfectly to detonate the localized transformers.

In the sudden, blinding darkness, Daniel grabbed Victoria's hand and pulled her hard into the labyrinth of the massive server racks.

Gunfire erupted, shattering the servers where they had just been standing, lighting up the darkness in terrifying flashes of muzzle fire.

The hunt was on.
