Chapter 14 - The Ambush

Daniel did not freeze. The moment the heavy door splintered open, his survival instincts took over.

He grabbed the heavy, solid-brass lamp from his desk and hurled it directly at the first gunman’s face.

The brass base connected with a sickening crunch. The man stumbled backward, his suppressed weapon firing wildly into the ceiling, raining drywall and plaster onto the carpet.

Daniel didn't wait for the other two to adjust their aim. He lunged over his desk, tackling the second man at the waist and driving him hard into the glass wall of the office.

The thick, tempered glass spider-webbed under the impact but held firm. Daniel drove his knee into the man's stomach, grabbed his tactical vest, and hurled him into the third gunman.

Both men crashed to the floor in a tangle of limbs and weapons.

Daniel sprinted out of the office and into the executive hallway.

The fire alarms were screaming, and the emergency strobe lights painted the corridor in disorienting flashes of red. The floor was completely abandoned; the automated lockdown protocol had already evacuated the civilian staff to the lower emergency bunkers.

"Victoria!" Daniel yelled into his encrypted two-way radio as he ran toward the emergency stairwell. "Do you read me?"

Static hissed in his ear. "Daniel! I am trapped on Sublevel Four! The electronic doors are sealed shut, and they are cutting through the main barricade with a thermal torch!"

"Hold on, I am coming down!" Daniel shouted.

He ripped open the door to the emergency stairwell and started taking the concrete steps three at a time. He had forty floors to descend.

His muscles burned, but the image of Victoria trapped in the server room pushed him past his physical limits.

By the time he reached the tenth floor, he heard heavy boots echoing up the stairwell from below. A second cartel hit squad was moving up to intercept him.

Daniel skidded to a halt. He was trapped between the men above and the squad below.

He ripped open the door to the tenth floor and stepped into the darkness of the marketing department. He needed a weapon, and he needed a distraction.

He ran into the chemical supply closet used by the janitorial staff. His background in operational logistics meant he knew exactly what materials were stored on every floor of his building.

He grabbed two bottles of industrial bleach and a gallon of ammonia.

He dragged a heavy metal filing cabinet to the stairwell door to barricade it. Seconds later, the door violently shook as the cartel mercenaries tried to ram it open.

"Open the door, Carter!" a muffled voice yelled from the stairwell. "You have nowhere to run!"

Daniel rapidly mixed the chemicals into a plastic mop bucket, holding his breath as the lethal, toxic chloramine gas began to rapidly expand.

He grabbed a heavy fire extinguisher from the wall.

With a roar, the mercenaries managed to push the filing cabinet back a few inches, creating a narrow gap in the doorway.

Daniel kicked the bucket of bubbling chemicals directly into the gap, spilling it onto the stairwell landing.

Thick, noxious white gas immediately billowed up the stairs.

Violent coughing and panicked shouting echoed from the stairwell as the mercenaries dropped their weapons, clawing at their burning eyes and throats, completely neutralized by the toxic cloud.

Daniel didn't wait. He sprinted to the elevator bank. The main cars were disabled, but he pried the doors open with the fire extinguisher to reveal the empty, dark elevator shaft.

He grabbed the greasy steel counterweight cable and wrapped his jacket around his hands to prevent friction burns.

He jumped into the abyss, sliding down the cable through the darkness, thirty floors straight down to the sublevels.

He hit the roof of the elevator car at the bottom with a bone-jarring thud.

He pried the emergency hatch open, dropped into the car, and forced the doors apart.

He was on Sublevel Four.

The smell of burning steel filled the air. Sparks were flying in a bright shower as two cartel soldiers used a heavy thermal torch to cut through the reinforced door of the server room. Victoria was trapped inside.

Daniel crept out of the elevator car, completely silent.

He raised the heavy red fire extinguisher above his head.

He rushed the first soldier from behind, smashing the heavy steel cylinder into the back of his helmet. The man dropped like a stone.

The second soldier spun around, dropping the thermal torch and reaching for his sidearm.

Daniel sprayed the fire extinguisher directly into the man’s face, blinding him with freezing chemical foam. As the man staggered blindly, Daniel swept his legs out from under him and knocked him unconscious with a swift punch to the jaw.

Daniel grabbed the discarded thermal torch and burned the electronic lock off the server room door.

He pulled the heavy door open. Victoria was huddled in the corner, clutching a heavy metal wrench.

"It's me," Daniel gasped, dropping the torch.

Victoria dropped the wrench and ran to him, wrapping her arms around him in overwhelming relief.

"They knew exactly where the honeypot was," Victoria breathed, pulling back and looking at the unconscious men. "The only people who knew about this server were you and me."

Daniel looked at the cartel soldiers on the floor.

"They didn't hack our system, Victoria," Daniel said, his voice cold with realization. "Someone with absolute administrative clearance let them in."

May you like

"There is only one person in this company besides me who has that level of clearance," Victoria whispered, her eyes widening in horror.

"Arthur Sterling," Daniel said. "The Chairman of the Board."
