Chapter 8 - The Desperate Climb

Cynthia's face was completely contorted into a mask of pure, unhinged madness as she tightly gripped my ankle.
"If I cannot have the massive fortune, absolutely nobody gets to walk out of this building alive!" she screamed hysterically, waving the live grenade.
I aggressively kicked backward with my heavy tactical boot, striking her squarely in her bruised jaw with entirely maximum force.
Her bloody grip instantly loosened, and I violently slammed the heavy iron door completely shut, sliding the rusted deadbolt firmly into place.
"Run directly up the stairs, do not stop for any reason!" I commanded the group, pushing Lily firmly ahead of me into the darkness.
A muffled, incredibly powerful explosion violently shook the entire tunnel, sending thick dust and sharp concrete raining heavily down upon our heads.
The reinforced iron door miraculously held, but the sheer force of the blast completely destroyed the lower staircase behind us.
We climbed the dark, spiraling stone steps for what felt like absolute hours, our lungs burning intensely in the stale, heavy air.
Eleanor was panting heavily, clearly physically exhausted from her recent traumatic childbirth and the sheer adrenaline of the escape.
Alexander gently reached out and took his newborn son securely into his own strong arms, offering his brave wife a deeply emotional, silent nod of absolute respect.
We finally reached a wooden trapdoor at the very top of the endless staircase, heavily sealed from the other side.
"It is entirely blocked by something extremely heavy in the lobby," I assessed, pushing my shoulders violently against the solid wood to no avail.
Suddenly, the unmistakable, terrifying sound of heavy combat boots echoed loudly from the intact stairs far below us.
Sterling's surviving mercenaries had somehow found another access point to the secret tunnel, and they were rapidly closing in on our trapped position.
"We are completely boxed in like rats," Alexander whispered grimly, shielding Eleanor and the baby with his large body.
I pulled out my specialized, encrypted hacking device and rapidly plugged it directly into the electronic keypad wired to the trapdoor.
"I just need two solid minutes to brute-force the electronic lock overriding this physical door," I said, my fingers flying frantically across the glowing screen.
The heavy footsteps below us grew incredibly loud, accompanied by the bright, sweeping red beams of tactical laser sights piercing the darkness.
"You do not have two minutes, Elena," Eleanor stated coldly, picking up a heavy iron pipe from the dusty floor.
Before Alexander could stop her, the brave mother turned around and began marching deliberately down the dark stairs directly toward the heavily armed killers.
"I will hold them off in the narrow chokepoint, just get my beautiful son safely out of this hell," she yelled back over her shoulder.
The device in my hand finally beeped loudly, glowing bright green as the heavy locking mechanism disengaged with a loud click.

I shoved the heavy wooden trapdoor violently open, bright natural sunlight aggressively blinding our adjusted eyes as we spilled onto the lobby floor.
We were safe, but a sudden barrage of deafening gunfire erupted violently from the dark tunnel beneath us, followed by Eleanor's agonizing scream.
