Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal

The heavy, metallic clicking of a dozen automatic weapons being readied echoed loudly over the roaring furnaces.
Sterling stood entirely untouched in the center of the armed circle, looking ridiculously calm holding Alexander's stolen newborn son.
"You have been orchestrating this entire nightmare from the very beginning, Sterling," Alexander said, his voice dripping with pure, unadulterated venom.
"I faithfully served your arrogant, ungrateful family for forty long years, watching you squander millions while I handled your dirty work," the corrupt lawyer spat back bitterly.
"I poisoned Eleanor to fake her death, I hired Vanessa to pretend she was pregnant, and I kept Eleanor alive simply to harvest the ultimate Whitmore heir."
I held Lily safely behind my body, my mind working at a thousand miles an hour to find a tactical weakness in their tight formation.
"Why go through all this elaborate trouble instead of just quietly stealing the money and disappearing?" I challenged loudly, desperately trying to buy us more time.
"Because the Whitmore corporate bylaws strictly state the company can only be fully liquidated by a blood heir, which I now legally control as his named guardian," Sterling gloated proudly.
He shifted the crying baby gently in his arms, proving he viewed the innocent child purely as a lucrative financial asset.
"If you kill us right now, my automated security protocols will immediately lock down this entire building, trapping you down here forever," I bluffed with absolute, unwavering confidence.
Sterling smirked darkly, reaching into his tailored suit jacket to pull out a heavy, familiar silver tablet.
It was my personal security master control device, the one I had securely locked in my penthouse safe an hour ago.
"I already bypassed your little security system, Elena, your tragic death will simply be recorded as a terrible boiler explosion," he laughed cruelly.
He casually raised his free hand, explicitly signaling the dangerous mercenaries to prepare to open fire on us.
Alexander stepped bravely in front of me and Lily, willingly offering his own body as a human shield for his broken family.
Suddenly, a massive, deafening alarm blared wildly throughout the entire subterranean level, flashing blinding red strobe lights everywhere.
The heavy automated blast doors of the boiler room began sliding rapidly shut, initiated by an external emergency command.
The heavily armed mercenaries looked around in absolute confusion, their strict tactical discipline momentarily shattering.
"Who just triggered the fire suppression system?" Sterling yelled angrily, frantically tapping the screen of my stolen tablet to no avail.
A thick, blinding foam began spraying violently from the ceiling vents, instantly filling the hot room with a dense, unbreathable chemical cloud.
Through the chaotic white mist, a shadowy, feminine figure dramatically dropped down from the overhead ventilation shaft.
She moved with incredible, lethal grace, rapidly disarming two confused mercenaries before they even realized what was happening.

When the chemical foam finally began to settle slightly, the mysterious woman stood fiercely in front of us, holding a captured rifle.
It was Eleanor Whitmore, very much alive, and she looked absolutely furious.
