Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Lie

The grand ballroom descended into a suffocating silence as my security team immediately sealed the heavy oak doors.
Alexander Whitmore stared at the crumpled ultrasound in his trembling hands, his handsome face completely drained of color.
The patient name printed in the dark corner belonged to Eleanor Whitmore, the beloved woman he had buried three years ago.
Vanessa collapsed helplessly onto the cold marble floor, sobbing hysterically as her fake silicone belly shifted awkwardly beneath her expensive silk maternity dress.
Her conniving sister, Cynthia, desperately tried to push past the hotel guards, but my highly trained men held their ground firmly.
"You absolutely have to believe me, Alexander, I only wanted to give you the perfect heir you always deserved," Vanessa pleaded weakly.
Alexander did not even look down at the deceitful woman he had married just one short year ago.
His furious, unblinking eyes were locked entirely on the corrupt family doctor who was currently sweating profusely through his designer suit.
"Where exactly did you get this medical scan, Dr. Evans?" Alexander demanded, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that shook the room.
Dr. Evans backed away slowly, his panicked eyes darting wildly toward the illuminated emergency exit signs in the dark corners.
"I am strictly bound by medical confidentiality rules, Mr. Whitmore, I cannot legally discuss another private patient," the doctor stammered nervously.
I stepped confidently forward, tapping the bright screen of my security tablet to pull up the doctor's heavily encrypted financial records.
"You just received a massive wire transfer of two million dollars from an untraceable offshore account this morning, Doctor," I stated clearly for the entire crowd to hear.
My brave eight-year-old daughter, Lily, stood quietly behind my leg, watching the massive corporate chaos she had accidentally unleashed.
"Tell me where my first wife is right now, or I swear you will spend the rest of your pathetic life in federal prison," Alexander threatened, taking a menacing step forward.
The corrupt doctor swallowed hard, pulling a crumpled piece of torn paper from his vest pocket and dropping it onto the floor.
"She is hidden at the old Blackwood Estate, but you are already entirely too late," Dr. Evans whispered, his voice shaking with absolute terror.
Alexander froze completely in his tracks.
The Blackwood Estate was a notorious, abandoned psychiatric facility that his wealthy family had supposedly demolished decades ago.
Before anyone else could react, the massive crystal chandeliers in the grand ballroom abruptly went pitch black.
A deafening, violent crash echoed near the kitchen service doors, followed quickly by the frantic shouting of my security guards.
When the hotel's emergency backup generators finally kicked in ten agonizing seconds later, the massive room was cast in a pale, eerie glow.
Vanessa was still sobbing loudly on the floor, but Cynthia and Dr. Evans were entirely gone.
I looked down quickly at the exact spot where the doctor had dropped the crumpled paper, but it had vanished.

In its place lay a small, tarnished silver key engraved with a highly intricate, terrifying symbol.
It was the exact same mysterious symbol tattooed on the wrist of the unknown man who had murdered my husband five years ago.
