Chapter 2 - The House of Secrets

I stared at the tarnished silver key in absolute horror, the traumatic memories of my husband's unsolved murder flooding rapidly back into my mind.
Alexander forcefully grabbed my shoulder, his gray eyes burning with an intense, desperate need for immediate answers.
"We need to get to the Blackwood Estate right this second, Elena," he commanded, already moving swiftly toward the private service elevator.
I quickly handed Lily over to my most trusted female security agent, strictly ordering her to lock my daughter inside the penthouse suite.
The midnight drive to the outskirts of the city was completely silent, filled only with the roaring engine of Alexander's sports car.
The Blackwood Estate loomed darkly against the stormy night sky, a crumbling gothic nightmare surrounded by overgrown, dying thorn bushes.
We used heavy flashlights to navigate the rotting wooden floors of the main lobby, sweeping the area for any hidden threats.
"My father swore he tore this awful place down after the massive scandal in the eighties," Alexander whispered, kicking aside a rusted wheelchair.
I pointed my bright beam toward a heavy steel door at the very end of the long, damp corridor.
The strange silver key from the ballroom fit perfectly into the ancient rusted lock, turning with a sickeningly loud click.
We cautiously pushed the heavy door open, stepping into a room that completely defied the decaying ruins around us.
It was a pristine, fully modern hospital suite, complete with running machines, fresh flowers, and a warm, unmade bed.
Alexander rushed frantically toward the bed, his hands shaking as he picked up a delicate silver locket resting on the white pillow.
"This is Eleanor's favorite necklace, the one she was supposedly wearing when her car crashed," he gasped, his voice breaking with profound emotion.
I carefully examined the complex medical machinery humming quietly in the corner of the sterile room.
The IV bags were still dripping slowly, meaning someone had literally just evacuated this hidden room minutes before we arrived.
I noticed a small, blinking red light hidden cleverly behind the vanity mirror on the wall.
"Alexander, do not move a single muscle, we are being watched," I warned softly, reaching for the heavy tactical baton on my belt.
I forcefully smashed the antique mirror, revealing a highly sophisticated, hidden surveillance camera wired directly into the wall.
A small digital monitor suddenly flickered to life on the bedside table, displaying a live video feed from my hotel's penthouse suite.

My heart completely stopped beating in my chest.
The grainy night-vision footage clearly showed Cynthia quietly unlocking the door to the safe room where I had just left Lily.
