Chapter 3 - The Race Against Time

"Lily!" I screamed in pure, unadulterated panic, completely dropping my heavy flashlight onto the sterile hospital floor.

Alexander grabbed my arm tightly, pulling me rapidly out of the underground suite and back toward the dark, crumbling hallway.

"We can make it back to the city in twenty minutes if I push the car to the absolute limit," he promised, his jaw set in rigid determination.

We sprinted dangerously through the overgrown thorn bushes, ignoring the sharp branches violently tearing at our expensive clothes.

As Alexander wildly navigated the slick, rain-soaked mountain roads, I frantically dialed my trusted security agent's cell phone.

The call went straight to a generic voicemail, sending an icy, terrifying chill straight down my spine.

"Cynthia is not working alone, she absolutely must have someone highly placed inside my security team," I deduced aloud, my mind racing with terrible possibilities.

Alexander gripped the leather steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned completely white under the dashboard lights.

"If that crazy woman touches one single hair on your daughter's head, I will personally destroy her," he vowed darkly.

We finally skidded violently to a halt outside the grand hotel, completely abandoning the expensive car on the front curb.

I drew my authorized concealed weapon, ignoring the shocked gasps of the remaining late-night guests in the luxurious lobby.

We bypassed the slow main elevators, sprinting fiercely up five flights of emergency stairs to reach the secure penthouse level.

The heavy door to the safe room was standing wide open, its complex biometric locking mechanism entirely shattered by brute force.

I rushed blindly into the dark room, my frantic eyes searching desperately for any sign of my precious eight-year-old daughter.

The room was completely empty, save for my trusted female agent lying entirely unconscious on the thick carpet.

A small, neatly folded piece of hotel stationery was resting prominently on the glass coffee table.

Alexander picked it up carefully, his face growing exceptionally pale as he read the handwritten message.

"She wants me to officially sign over the entire Whitmore empire by midnight, or we never see Lily or Eleanor again," he read aloud, his voice entirely hollow.

I felt the heavy room violently spinning around me, the absolute worst nightmare of my life coming painfully true.

Then, my tactical radio suddenly crackled to life with a burst of harsh static.

"Mommy, they put me in the dark basement where the loud pipes are," Lily's terrified, tiny voice echoed through the speaker.

Before I could even press the button to reply, a deep, unfamiliar male voice cut brutally into the transmission.

"Your clever little girl found a radio, Elena, but she just made a fatal mistake by giving away our location."
