Chapter 4 - The Subterranean Trap

I did not waste a single, precious second waiting for backup to arrive.
Alexander and I sprinted fiercely toward the restricted service elevators, bypassing every standard protocol I had personally written for this hotel.
"The only place with loud pipes is the sub-basement utility corridor, a highly restricted zone meant only for head engineers," I explained rapidly as we descended.
"How does Cynthia even know how to navigate the deepest levels of my own family's building?" Alexander asked, checking the heavy safety on his own firearm.
"Because she was given the master architectural blueprints by whoever is truly running this massive conspiracy," I replied grimly.
The elevator doors chimed softly, opening into a dark, damp concrete corridor that smelled strongly of rust and old machinery.
Massive steam pipes hissed loudly above our heads, creating a thick, blinding fog that severely limited our visibility.
I moved with extreme tactical precision, keeping my weapon raised as we navigated the endless maze of dangerous industrial equipment.
A sudden, sharp metallic clang echoed from the far end of the tunnel, freezing the blood directly in my veins.
"Mommy!" Lily's desperate, crying voice pierced through the loud hissing of the heavy steam vents.
I abandoned all caution and ran blindly toward the sound of my weeping daughter, completely ignoring Alexander's warnings.
We burst through a set of heavy iron doors, entering a massive, cavernous boiler room filled with roaring furnaces.
Lily was tied securely to a metal chair in the center of the room, her small face covered in dark soot and fresh tears.
I lunged forward to free her, but Alexander forcefully grabbed my tactical vest and yanked me violently backward.
A nearly invisible, thin wire was stretched tightly across the floor, connected directly to a block of military-grade explosives wired to the chair.
"It is a highly sophisticated tripwire, if you take one more step, the entire basement completely detonates," Alexander warned, his voice remarkably steady.
Cynthia stepped smoothly out from behind a massive, glowing boiler, holding a small remote detonator in her manicured hand.
"You are actually much smarter than your dead husband was, Elena," Cynthia sneered, a wicked, triumphant smile twisting her pretty face.
"Let the innocent child go, Cynthia, I brought the signed transfer papers for the company," Alexander lied smoothly, holding up a random document from his pocket.
Cynthia laughed incredibly harshly, shaking her blonde head with utter, absolute contempt.
"I do not want your pathetic company anymore, Alexander, my employer only wants the child you are currently hiding."
Alexander looked completely genuinely confused, his dark eyebrows knitting together in deep frustration.
"What in the world are you talking about, Vanessa was never even pregnant," he argued desperately.

Cynthia's wicked smile grew even wider, revealing the true, horrific depth of her massive deception.
"Vanessa was faking it, yes, but your precious Eleanor successfully gave birth to a beautiful baby boy three weeks ago, and we need his genetic material to access the real vault."
