Chapter 5 - The Phantom Heir

The suffocating heat of the boiler room felt entirely unbearable as Cynthia's terrifying revelation echoed off the concrete walls.

Alexander stumbled backward, his entire world shattering completely as he realized he was already a father to a living son.

"Where is my baby right now, Cynthia?" he roared violently, stepping dangerously close to the invisible explosive tripwire.

"The baby is perfectly safe with our employer, but this little girl dies if you do not wire your entire personal fortune to my offshore account immediately," Cynthia demanded, waving the detonator.

I stared intensely at the complex explosive device wired to my weeping daughter's chair, my security training heavily analyzing every single wire.

"You made a critical mistake, Cynthia," I stated loudly, keeping my voice incredibly calm to mask my sheer panic.

"My late husband taught me exactly how to disarm this specific military detonator before your people cowardly murdered him."

Cynthia's arrogant smile faltered slightly, a brief flash of genuine uncertainty crossing her sharp, cruel eyes.

I slowly lowered my weapon to the dirty floor, raising both of my hands to show I was entirely unarmed.

"Let me carefully walk over and untie my child, and I will personally give you the master override codes to the hotel's main vault," I offered, raising the stakes completely.

The massive hotel vault contained over fifty million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds, a highly guarded secret only I knew about.

Greed violently overrode Cynthia's basic common sense, exactly as I had desperately prayed it would.

"You have exactly thirty seconds to give me those vault codes before I push this button," she snapped aggressively, lowering the remote slightly.

I took a slow, agonizingly careful step over the deadly tripwire, my eyes locked entirely on my terrified daughter.

"Close your eyes tightly, Lily, Mommy is right here," I whispered softly, reaching for the heavy ropes binding her small wrists.

As my fingers grazed the rough rope, I rapidly pulled a hidden, ceramic tactical blade from my sleeve.

In one fluid, lightning-fast motion, I slashed the binding ropes and violently shoved Lily completely to the floor behind the heavy chair.

"Alexander, now!" I screamed at the absolute top of my lungs.

Alexander instantly fired his weapon, completely shooting the plastic detonator right out of Cynthia's hand before she could press the trigger.

The tiny remote shattered into dozens of plastic pieces against the brick wall, rendering the bomb entirely useless.

I scooped Lily up securely into my arms, holding her trembling body tightly against my chest as hot tears streamed down my face.

Cynthia let out a furious, animalistic scream and turned rapidly to flee deeper into the dark maintenance tunnels.

Before Alexander could chase after her, the massive iron doors of the boiler room burst violently open.

A squad of heavily armed tactical mercenaries flooded into the hot room, entirely surrounding us with bright laser sights.

Leading them was the beloved, trusted family attorney, Mr. Sterling, holding a small, crying infant wrapped tightly in a blue blanket.

"Thank you for doing all the hard work of disarming that bomb, Elena, it makes killing you all much easier," Sterling smiled coldly.
