Chapter 7 - The Mother's Wrath

Eleanor looked absolutely nothing like the delicate, fragile woman depicted in the glamorous oil paintings hanging in the Whitmore mansion.

She wore a dark tactical suit stolen from one of the guards, and her beautiful face was hardened by three years of unimaginable, agonizing captivity.

"Get entirely away from my son, you pathetic parasite," Eleanor ordered Sterling, her voice practically vibrating with raw, murderous rage.

Sterling stumbled backward nervously, using the crying baby awkwardly as a human shield against the barrel of her heavy rifle.

"If you shoot me, you risk hitting the exact child you suffered three years to bring into this world," the cowardly lawyer threatened weakly.

Alexander stepped slowly out of the thick chemical fog, his eyes entirely locked on the resilient wife he thought he had lost forever.

"Eleanor, please do not do anything reckless, we will get him back safely," Alexander pleaded softly, raising his hands in a calming gesture.

"I have spent a thousand dark nights dreaming of exactly how I would tear this man apart," Eleanor replied coldly, never lowering her weapon.

I used the tense standoff to discreetly tap a hidden emergency distress button stitched completely into the collar of my uniform.

It was a completely offline, analog signal that went directly to the local police swat commander, a close personal friend of my late husband.

"You cannot possibly win this, Eleanor, my remaining men are stationed at every single exit of this hotel," Sterling laughed, regaining his arrogant composure.

"I do not need to use the exits, Sterling, because I spent the last three years memorizing the original architectural blueprints you carelessly left in my cell," she countered brilliantly.

Without any warning, Eleanor accurately shot the heavy steam pressure valve directly above Sterling's head.

A massive, blinding geyser of scalding hot steam erupted violently downward, forcing the corrupt lawyer to drop to his knees in intense pain.

In the ensuing chaotic confusion, Alexander lunged fiercely forward, tackling Sterling to the wet concrete floor with brutal, bone-crushing force.

Eleanor dropped her heavy weapon and slid across the slippery floor, safely catching the falling infant in her arms before he hit the ground.

The remaining mercenaries blindly raised their weapons in the thick steam, wildly preparing to fire indiscriminately into the haze.

I grabbed Lily tightly and dragged her safely behind the massive steel reinforced boiler tank for heavy cover.

"We absolutely need to get out of this room right now before the steam clears and they open fire!" I yelled urgently over the deafening noise.

Eleanor pressed a hidden, rusted lever on the brick wall that nobody else knew existed, revealing a dark, narrow smuggling tunnel from the prohibition era.

"Follow me closely, this tunnel leads directly up to the main lobby," she commanded, clutching her crying baby fiercely to her chest.

We scrambled desperately into the dark, damp passage just as the angry mercenaries began blindly shooting up the boiler room.

As I pulled the heavy secret door shut behind us, a bloody hand suddenly shot through the narrow gap, aggressively grabbing my ankle.

Cynthia had silently crawled through the thick smoke, and she was holding a live, pulled grenade completely ready to detonate.
