Chapter 5 - The Detective's Secret

The massive boardroom spun around Alessia as the executives angrily demanded an explanation.

She bit the inside of her cheek, refusing to let Garrett and Evelyn see her break down.

"A forged document changes absolutely nothing until a federal judge says it does," Alessia declared confidently.

She turned on her heel and walked out with her head held high before security could touch her.

Her mind was racing as she hailed a yellow taxi and directed it to the police precinct.

She needed to confront Detective Miller, the mysterious man in the scandalous photograph.

He was the only person alive who could prove the affair was a fabricated lie designed to steal her company.

Alessia sneaked into his cluttered office while he was out getting his morning coffee.

She ruthlessly rummaged through his locked filing cabinet using a bent hairpin.

At the very bottom drawer, she found a hidden dossier labeled with her father's name.

Inside were multiple bank statements showing massive deposits from Evelyn's shell company directly to Miller.

There was also a yellowed, original birth certificate hidden away for over twenty years.

Alessia unfolded the fragile paper and read the name of the biological mother.

It did not say Miriam.

The biological mother listed on the government certificate was Evelyn.

Alessia clamped a hand tightly over her mouth to muffle her own horrified gasp.

She had unknowingly married her own half-brother.

A cold metal barrel pressed firmly against the back of her head.

"You really shouldn't go digging in my private files, kid," Detective Miller whispered from behind her.

The safety of the loaded gun clicked off loudly in the quiet office.
