Chapter 2 - The Stolen Legacy

The harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital waiting room buzzed aggressively above Alessia.

She paced the cheap linoleum floor while a team of doctors worked frantically to stabilize her mother.

Her phone vibrated in her pocket with a frantic message from her estate lawyer.

It was an urgent request for a meeting regarding the mansion's property deed.

Alessia called him immediately, her hands shaking slightly with leftover adrenaline.

"Garrett is locked out, so change all the security codes immediately," she ordered the lawyer.

There was a heavy, uncomfortable silence on the other end of the line.

"Alessia, you don't own the property anymore," the lawyer said in a soft, pitying voice.

She froze entirely, the chaotic hospital noise fading into a distant hum.

"That is impossible, because my father left everything exclusively in my name," she replied sharply.

The lawyer explained that a transfer deed had been legally filed early yesterday morning.

It bore her exact signature, transferring the entire estate to Evelyn's private shell corporation.

Alessia realized with growing horror that Garrett hadn't married her for love.

He had married her to orchestrate a complete, slow-burning hostile takeover of her life.

She hung up the phone abruptly and rushed back to the intensive care unit.

The head doctor was waiting outside Miriam's room with a deeply grim expression.

"Your mother's cardiac arrest was not caused by the physical trauma of the fall," the doctor said.

He handed Alessia a toxicology report that showed highly lethal levels of arsenic in her bloodstream.

Someone in her own home had been quietly poisoning Miriam for months.

Alessia looked through the glass window and saw a dark shadow moving near Miriam's bed.

Alessia slammed open the door, but the nurse turned around holding a razor-sharp scalpel.
