Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

Alessia grabbed a heavy metal tray from the counter and swung it hard at the masked nurse.

The scalpel clattered loudly to the floor as the assassin stumbled backward in surprise.

Before Alessia could rip the mask off, the woman sprinted out the emergency exit and disappeared.

Alessia desperately tore the new IV bag away from her mother's arm.

The heart monitors beeped wildly for a moment, but Miriam's pulse slowly stabilized.

Hospital security arrived far too late, finding only a discarded uniform dumped in the stairwell.

Alessia knew she could not trust anyone in this compromised hospital anymore.

She paid cash to arrange for a private medical transport to move Miriam to a secure safe house.

Sitting in the back of the moving ambulance, Alessia urgently opened her laptop.

She needed to access her father's corporate servers to freeze her bank accounts before Evelyn drained them.

Her login credentials flashed a bright red error message across the screen.

She typed in the master override codes her late father had secretly given her years ago.

The screen flickered and loaded a live security video feed instead of the financial database.

Garrett was sitting comfortably in her father's leather CEO chair, smoking an expensive cigar.

"I told you that you needed to learn your place, Alessia," Garrett's arrogant voice echoed from the speakers.

He held up a signed legal document authorizing a complete merger of their family assets.

"By the way, you should really check the identity of your ambulance driver," he laughed cruelly.

The video feed cut to black, leaving Alessia sitting in cold panic.

The ambulance suddenly swerved violently off the main highway and accelerated toward a concrete barrier.

The driver locked the doors from the front cabin and jumped out of the moving vehicle.
