Chapter 8 - The Explosive Timer

The heavy green grenade bounced aggressively across the wet concrete floor.
It rolled directly under the massive fragile air intake pipe of the main HVAC system.
If that explosive successfully detonated, it would instantly blow the lethal powder through every single vent in the entire mansion.
I did not have any time to think about the terrifying physical consequences of my reckless actions.
I scrambled quickly out from beneath the metal workbench and dove desperately toward the rolling explosive.
I grabbed the cold metal sphere and forcefully hurled it deeply down a dark drainage grate in the center of the room.
I threw my entire body flat against the hard concrete just as a massive explosion violently rocked the foundation.
A massive geyser of dirty water and sharp concrete shrapnel blasted forcefully out of the deep drain.
The deafening concussive blast knocked the two mercenaries completely off their balanced feet.
Nathan successfully seized the perfect strategic opportunity and fired two incredibly precise shots.
Both masked men dropped permanently to the wet floor without making another sound.
My ears rang violently as I stumbled weakly to my bruised feet.
I looked desperately at the digital timer securely attached to the poison hopper.
The glowing red numbers showed exactly thirty agonizing seconds remaining.
I frantically ripped my bare and bleeding hands into the tangled mess of colored wires.
I knew absolutely nothing about professionally defusing bombs or bypassing sophisticated digital timers.
I simply grabbed the thick black main power cable connecting the device to the ductwork and pulled with all my remaining strength.
The heavy wire sparked violently and snapped loudly right as the digital clock hit exactly one second.

The massive machine instantly went completely dead and beautifully silent.
We had successfully stopped the massive toxic release, but Dr. Aris was still somewhere on the large estate.
