Chapter 3 - The Locked Room

Blind panic rapidly rose in my chest as I violently rattled the brass doorknob of the guest bedroom.

I was completely trapped inside a dangerous mafia boss's mansion with absolutely no way to contact the outside world.

I paced the luxurious room and tried to think highly logically about my next necessary move.

Whoever took that tissue now knew for certain that I was actively investigating the ventilation system.

I frantically searched the beautiful room for another exit or a heavy object to break the thick reinforced window glass.

Before I could find a suitable weapon, the deadbolt clicked loudly and the door slowly swung open.

Nathan Coleman stood silently in the doorway with an aura of absolute terrifying authority.

He was the ruthless billionaire who completely controlled the city's vast dark underworld.

His dark eyes meticulously scanned my terrified face as he stepped into the room and closed the door behind him.

He asked me calmly why his head of security found me climbing the walls in his sick sons' nursery.

I knew that lying to this incredibly dangerous man would be an instantly fatal mistake.

I looked him directly in the eyes and boldly told him that his expensive doctors were completely wrong.

I explained the clean screws and the strange granular powder I had found hiding in the ductwork.

Nathan listened in absolute silence without showing even a single tiny trace of human emotion.

Then his secure satellite phone vibrated loudly in his tailored suit pocket.

He answered it quickly and his hardened face immediately turned a sickly shade of pale white.

He dropped the expensive phone entirely onto the carpet and ran frantically out into the hallway.

I sprinted aggressively after him down the long corridor toward the children's nursery.
