Chapter 7 - The Basement Ambush

The completely smashed biometric scanner meant we had absolutely no electronic way to open the heavy basement door.
Nathan cursed loudly and quickly pulled a silver backup revolver from a hidden ankle holster.
He aimed precisely and fired three deafening shots directly into the heavy steel hinges.
He forcefully kicked the severely damaged steel door open and rushed blindly into the dark utility room.
The massive industrial HVAC machinery hummed incredibly loudly, violently vibrating the concrete floor beneath our feet.
Attached directly to the main air duct was a sophisticated digital timing device connected to a large plastic hopper.
The heavy hopper was filled entirely to the brim with pounds of the deadly white powder.
The digital countdown clock glowed bright red and showed only two terrifying minutes remaining.
I ran recklessly toward the machine and tried to frantically yank the colored wires out of the digital timer.
Suddenly, a heavy tactical combat boot kicked me brutally in the right ribs.
I collapsed instantly to the hard concrete floor, gasping desperately for clean air.
Three muscular men wearing black tactical gear and dark ski masks stepped out from the dark shadows behind the massive boilers.
They were heavily armed professional mercenaries hired by Dr. Aris to ensure the poison was fully deployed.
Nathan did not hesitate for even a single fraction of a second.
He raised his silver revolver and instantly shot the first masked man squarely in the center of the chest.
The enclosed room erupted into chaotic and deafening gunfire as the remaining two mercenaries fired rapidly back.
I crawled frantically beneath a heavy metal workbench to successfully avoid the deadly flying crossfire.
Nathan expertly dodged behind a thick concrete support pillar to quickly reload his empty weapon.

One of the angry mercenaries pulled a terrifyingly large green grenade from his tactical vest.
He pulled the metal pin and tossed the heavy explosive directly toward the main HVAC air intake pipe.
