Chapter 2 - The Polished Screws

I simply could not stop staring at those perfectly clean screws on the dirty ventilation grate.
In a luxury mansion with a dedicated team of professional cleaners, dust accumulates evenly unless something is physically disturbed.
I waited patiently until Dr. Aris finally left the room to take a private phone call in the hallway.
I quickly dragged a heavy wooden chair to the wall and climbed up to get a much closer look.
My bare fingers gently touched the bottom edge of the cold metal grate.
I found a tiny trace of strange white powder completely separate from the normal gray household dust.
It felt slightly gritty and unnatural against my skin.
I pulled a small clean tissue from my apron pocket and carefully collected a tiny sample of the unknown substance.
Suddenly, a massive and incredibly heavy hand grabbed my left ankle and yanked me forcefully backward.
I crashed heavily onto the plush carpet and scrambled away in sheer unadulterated terror.
A massive man in a tailored dark suit stood towering over me with cold and dead eyes.
It was Marco, the notoriously ruthless head of security for the entire Coleman estate.
He demanded to know exactly what I was doing tampering with the expensive security vents.
I frantically tried to explain about the perfectly clean screws and the mysterious white powder.
Marco did not listen to a single desperate word I said.
He aggressively grabbed my upper arm and dragged me effortlessly out into the long hallway.
He shoved me roughly into a completely empty guest bedroom across the hall.
The heavy oak door slammed shut directly in my face.

I heard the distinct and terrifying click of a heavy deadbolt locking me securely inside.
When I looked down at my shaking hand, the tissue with the vital white powder was completely gone.
