Chapter 8 - The Police Ambush

Two uniformed police officers stepped out of the cruiser and approached Sarah's vehicle.

My heart pounded against my ribs but I forced myself to remain completely calm.

The older officer tapped on my window and asked me to step out of the car.

He informed me that the homeowner had reported a massive burglary in progress at this address.

Daniel had called the police from his airplane and claimed I was violently robbing his property.

I stepped out into the damp driveway and calmly handed the officer my driver's license.

I explained that I was simply retrieving my personal belongings from my own residence.

Before the officer could verify my identity a yellow taxi screeched to a halt on the street.

Daniel jumped out of the cab looking completely disheveled and frantic.

He ran across the wet lawn pointing his finger directly at my face.

He yelled at the officers to arrest me immediately for trespassing and grand larceny.

Daniel confidently claimed that he had sole legal ownership of the house thanks to his recent quitclaim deed.

The officers looked at me sternly and placed their hands cautiously on their duty belts.

They asked Daniel if he had physical proof of his ownership to justify an arrest.

Daniel pulled a crumpled copy of the forged deed from his jacket pocket and handed it to the cops.

He smirked at me with a look of absolute arrogant victory on his face.

He actually thought his desperate little piece of fake paper was going to send me to jail.

I did not scream or cry or try to defend myself to the confused police officers.

I simply pulled out my phone and made a very quick call to the new property owner.

The heavy front door of the house suddenly swung wide open.

Evelyn Vance stepped out onto the porch holding a certified binder of legal documents.

She looked down at Daniel with an expression of pure corporate ruthlessness.

She loudly asked the police officers to remove the trespassing maniac from her front lawn.
