Chapter 2 - The Forged Signature

I sat in the passenger seat of my sister Sarah's car while she drove me away from my own house.

My baby was finally warm and safe in her car seat in the back.

I opened my laptop on my knees and pulled up the county clerk's digital database.

Vivian had sent me the scanned copy of the quitclaim deed that Daniel had submitted.

I stared at the screen in absolute disbelief as I examined the bottom of the page.

My signature was forged perfectly in blue ink next to a fake notary stamp.

Daniel was attempting to legally transfer half of my property into his own name while I was giving birth.

The county had flagged the document for a minor clerical error which delayed the processing time.

This meant the house was technically still entirely in my name for the next forty-eight hours.

I called Marcus Lee who was the wealthiest cash investor in our local real estate market.

I offered him the property at a twenty percent discount for an immediate close.

Marcus apologized and said he could not touch the house right now.

He explained that Daniel had been calling local investors all week spreading a toxic rumor.

Daniel had told everyone that the foundation was sinking and the house was facing a massive mold lawsuit.

He was actively trying to sabotage any potential sale so he could secure his illegal ownership.

I closed my laptop and felt a dangerous wave of pure anger wash over my exhausted body.

My husband was not just being petty or controlling.

He was executing a highly calculated financial attack against me and my newborn daughter.

Sarah parked in her driveway and handed me a warm cup of coffee.

I logged into my joint banking account to see how Daniel had paid for his family vacation.

The screen loaded and displayed a completely zeroed out balance.

Daniel had secretly drained my entire life savings to fund his luxury getaway in Cabo.
