Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Checkmate

Daniel's mother sneered at me and immediately opened the banking app on her phone.

Her smug expression vanished instantly as she stared at her completely frozen financial accounts.

I explained that the bank had successfully reversed the fraudulent eighty-thousand-dollar wire transfer.

They had also flagged her personal accounts for suspected money laundering and complicity in the theft.

I handed the police officer the printed arrest warrant that Richard had expedited through a friendly judge.

The warrant was for Daniel's felony forgery of a legal real estate document.

The officers immediately grabbed Daniel by his arms and placed him in heavy steel handcuffs.

His mother began screaming hysterically as the police dragged her precious son into the back of the cruiser.

I told his mother to return my grandmother's diamond necklace right now or I would press charges for grand theft.

She nervously unclasped the priceless jewelry with shaking hands and dropped it into my open palm.

Evelyn Vance ordered her private security guards to physically escort the sobbing women off the property.

Daniel and his toxic family were left completely broke, homeless, and facing severe criminal charges.

I got back into Sarah's car and finally took a long and peaceful breath.

My newborn daughter cooed softly from the back seat completely unaware of the chaos.

I had successfully protected my child and secured our entire financial future in just three days.

We drove to my beautiful new luxury apartment that I had leased using the cash from the house sale.

I settled onto the soft couch and fed my beautiful baby while watching the city lights glitter outside.

I finally felt safe and completely in control of my own destiny.

A few hours later the apartment concierge knocked on my door to deliver a small unmarked package.

I carefully opened the brown cardboard box and found a single glossy photograph inside.

It was a picture of me holding my baby through the living room window of my new apartment taken just minutes ago.

Attached to the photograph was a handwritten note that said Daniel was always just the puppet.
