Chapter 5 - The Custody Trap

I read the emergency custody petition three times because I simply could not believe the words.
Daniel had hired an incredibly expensive family lawyer to paint me as an unstable and dangerous mother.
He claimed that I had threatened to harm the baby and that I was completely detached from reality.
This entire legal maneuver was designed to force me into giving him the house in exchange for my daughter.
He knew that I would sacrifice absolutely everything I owned to keep my baby safe.
I wiped a single tear from my cheek and looked down at my sleeping child.
I decided right then that I was not going to negotiate with a domestic terrorist.
I called Richard Sterling who was the most feared and aggressive divorce attorney in the entire state.
I promised Richard a massive retainer fee from the upcoming house sale if he took my case immediately.
Richard reviewed the forged deed and the video evidence of Daniel committing felony fraud.
He chuckled darkly and told me that Daniel had just handed us the perfect weapon.
We drafted a brutal counter-suit demanding sole custody and full restitution of the stolen funds.
Meanwhile the forty-eight-hour countdown for the house sale was rapidly approaching zero.
Evelyn had already wired the full purchase amount into a secure third-party escrow account.
I spent the entire afternoon electronically signing hundreds of pages of real estate documents.
My phone suddenly buzzed with an incoming international call from Daniel.
I ignored it the first time but he called back immediately.
I pressed the accept button and put the phone on speaker so Sarah could hear.

Daniel was screaming at the top of his lungs over the sound of a crowded hotel lobby.
He demanded to know why his platinum credit card had just been violently declined at the resort restaurant.
