Chapter 8 - The Ashes of Deceit

I screamed in sheer, absolute terror as the massive burning beam crushed the woman who had caused so much pain.

Mark desperately tried to reach back through the aggressive flames to save his trapped mother.

I grabbed his torn shirt and pulled him away by force, screaming that we absolutely had to save the baby first.

We squeezed painfully through the broken drywall and stumbled out onto the small balcony outside the master bedroom.

The cold, refreshing night air filled our burning lungs as we desperately gasped for clean oxygen.

Neighbors had already gathered frantically on the front lawn, and the deafening sound of multiple fire engines wailed loudly in the distance.

Mark bravely helped me climb down the sturdy, wooden decorative trellis securely attached to the side of the house.

As soon as my bare feet hit the soft, wet grass, I collapsed completely into the waiting arms of a rushing paramedic.

They immediately took baby Lily from my arms to carefully check her tiny, fragile lungs for severe smoke inhalation.

I sat shivering on the cold metal bumper of the ambulance, helplessly watching my beautiful home burn entirely to the ground.

Several police officers quickly surrounded Mark, instantly placing him in heavy, unforgiving steel handcuffs.

Rachel had safely escaped through a side window and immediately handed the lead officers her phone containing the intact security footage.

They formally arrested Mark on the spot for breaking and entering, domestic assault, and severe reckless endangerment.

He didn't even try to fight them or argue as they shoved him forcefully into the back of the dark squad car.

A senior detective approached me a few minutes later with a grim, highly serious expression on his face.

He informed me that they had successfully captured Vanessa trying to flee the burning neighborhood in her luxury sports car.

However, the detective also revealed that the expedited DNA test results from the hospital had just been officially emailed to my lawyer.
