Chapter 6 - The True Enemy

The heavy metal crowbar clattered loudly against the wooden floorboards as Mark dropped it in sheer disbelief.
He stumbled backward, his arrogant and highly aggressive demeanor completely shattered by Carol's shocking, life-altering confession.
He frantically asked his mother if Vanessa was just using him in an elaborate plot for personal revenge.
Carol nodded slowly, bitter tears streaming freely down her aging, deeply wrinkled face.
She tearfully explained that Vanessa had somehow discovered the illegal adoption records hidden in a bank vault over a year ago.
Vanessa had intentionally seduced Mark to systematically destroy the wealthy family from the inside out to avenge her dead sister.
She had completely faked her current pregnancy and intentionally planted the dark seeds of doubt about my absolute loyalty.
Mark fell heavily to his knees, burying his face in his hands as he finally realized he had completely destroyed his own marriage for a malicious lie.
He looked up at me with incredibly desperate, pathetic, and pleading eyes.
He begged me to completely forgive him for ever doubting my unwavering faithfulness to him.
I stared down coldly at the pathetic, broken man kneeling on my bedroom floor.
I firmly told him that his desperate apology meant absolutely nothing to me anymore.
I harshly reminded him that he had chosen to heartlessly throw me and his newborn daughter away like disposable garbage.
Suddenly, a slow, highly mocking applause echoed ominously from the bottom of the wooden staircase.

Vanessa walked gracefully up the stairs, casually holding a silver lighter and a large, red gasoline canister.
She smiled brightly at all of us and proudly announced that it was finally time for the entire family legacy to burn.
