Chapter 1 - The Secret Panic

The nurse quickly rushed out of the cold hospital room, leaving me completely alone with my husband and his mother.

I held my newborn daughter much tighter against my chest, feeling her tiny heartbeat against my skin.

My lawyer, Rachel, had just confirmed over the phone that she was already drafting the divorce papers.

Mark scoffed loudly, shaking his head as if I was the one being completely unreasonable and hysterical.

He looked at me with cold, dead eyes and declared that he would never pay a single dime for a child that belonged to another man.

He turned on his heel and walked out of the hospital room without looking back or shedding a single tear.

Carol, my usually composed mother-in-law, stood up from her chair with violently trembling hands.

She rushed to the side of my hospital bed and grabbed my arm with a desperate, crushing grip.

She frantically begged me to call my lawyer back and cancel the DNA test immediately.

I looked at her in absolute disbelief, entirely unable to comprehend why she was suddenly panicking.

I told her firmly that I had absolutely nothing to hide because I had been completely faithful to her son for our entire marriage.

Carol burst into tears, her heavily made-up face turning as pale as a ghost under the fluorescent lights.

She whispered desperately that taking this genetic test would completely destroy the entire family legacy.

Before I could demand to know what dark secret she was hiding, the heavy hospital door swung open again.

A stunningly beautiful young woman with bright blonde hair and a confident smirk walked directly into my private room.

She was proudly wearing the incredibly expensive diamond necklace that had mysteriously gone missing from my bedroom last month.

The strange woman smiled at Carol and told her it was time to leave this depressing place.

Then she looked directly at me and proudly announced that she was Mark's new girlfriend.
