Chapter 5 - The Ambush

Rachel quickly slammed and locked my heavy bedroom door, instantly pulling a canister of pepper spray from her designer purse.
I held my peacefully sleeping baby tightly against my chest, desperately praying she wouldn't wake up and cry.
Heavy, aggressive footsteps pounded up the wooden staircase with terrifying, relentless speed.
Someone began violently kicking the bedroom door, causing the solid wood to splinter and crack under the immense pressure.
I backed away cautiously toward the large bay window, fully preparing to scream for the neighbors to call for help.
The bedroom door crashed open, revealing Mark holding a heavy, dangerous metal crowbar in his hands.
His eyes were completely wild, and he looked entirely unhinged and capable of extreme violence.
He screamed at me and demanded that I hand over the blue envelope immediately to save my own life.
Rachel stepped bravely in front of me and confidently told him the police were already on their way to the house.
Mark laughed a chilling, highly maniacal laugh and slowly raised the heavy metal weapon.
He arrogantly stated that he didn't care about the police because he possessed enough money to buy his way out of any legal trouble.
Before he could swing the deadly weapon, a sharp, authoritative voice echoed from the dark hallway.
Carol stepped gracefully into the destroyed room, holding a small, black handgun aimed directly at her own son.
She strictly ordered Mark to drop the weapon instantly and step far away from her innocent granddaughter.
Mark stared at the woman who had raised him in absolute, paralyzing shock.
He angrily yelled at her, asking why she was protecting a supposedly cheating wife over her own flesh and blood.
Carol's hands shook terribly as she slowly cocked the hammer of the gun.

She looked Mark dead in the eye and finally revealed the ultimate, devastating truth.
She told him that his real biological mother was Vanessa's older sister, who had mysteriously died years ago trying to expose the adoption ring.
