Chapter 2 - The Stolen Life

I stared at the sparkling diamonds resting comfortably around the strange woman's neck.

My heart pounded so aggressively in my chest that I could hear it echoing loudly in my ears.

I fiercely demanded to know exactly who she was and how she got past the hospital security to enter my room.

The woman smirked again and introduced herself as Vanessa.

She proudly announced that she was currently three months pregnant with Mark's real biological child.

The sterile room started to spin violently as the ultimate betrayal crashed over me in terrifying, suffocating waves.

Mark stepped back into the room and wrapped his arm highly protectively around Vanessa's slender waist.

He looked at me with pure disgust and stated that Vanessa was the only woman in the world he truly trusted.

He arrogantly claimed that my sudden, unhesitating demand for a divorce just proved my overwhelming guilt.

I looked desperately at Carol, fully expecting her to defend my honor after years of a supposedly close relationship.

Instead, my mother-in-law kept her eyes firmly glued to the linoleum floor and remained completely, cowardly silent.

Mark reached into his designer jacket and threw a thick legal document directly onto my hospital bed.

He aggressively ordered me to sign the postnuptial agreement immediately to avoid a messy public scandal.

The unfair document clearly stated that I would walk away from our marriage with absolutely no financial support.

I grabbed the heavy stack of papers and ripped it straight down the middle without breaking eye contact.

I told him I would happily see him in court with the certified DNA results clutched in my hand.

Mark glared at me with absolute, unfiltered hatred burning in his dark eyes.

He warned me that I had just made the biggest, most destructive mistake of my miserable life.

As they confidently turned to leave the room, Vanessa leaned in incredibly close to my ear.

She whispered maliciously that she already knew exactly what dark secret Carol was desperately trying to hide.
